RC40 coil spring noise
The RC40 fork is sprung by a long, single coilspring housed in the lefthand leg. As it compresses and extends the spring will often reduce in length by approximately 5-10mm. This 'springset' is taken account of in the fork design- you may have noticed your fork reduces in length during the first month of use, starting long but settleing to its correct specified length.
Once bedded in the spring normally has a slight bow down its 270mm length which can allow spring to contact the internal diameter of the stanchion, creating a rattle or thudding noise. Although quite normal in a coil sprung fork, following this simple procedure can reduce or even totally remove this noise.
Engage the Launch Control dial and rotate Travel Express to maximum travel. Turn the bike upside down, remove wheel then scratch a small 'indicator' line on end face of threaded spring base (in centre of nut on lefthand dropout).
Using a 13mm open ended spanner loosen nut 2-3 turns. Then use a soft faced hammer to tap end of nut until threaded base is freed and can be pressed down by hand. Now rotate the Travel Express dial anti-clockwise watching the threaded spring base and your marked indicator line move. Rotate approximately 90 degrees (nut may need holding down during this operation). Re-tighten nut. Test ride bike then double check nuts are tight (do not overtighten).
Fine tuning this procedure by rotating the spring base more or less than 90 degrees will position spring with optimum clearance inside fork. So try rotating a full 180 degrees from original position if 90 fails to silence the spring.
